Tango Intermediate
A dance originating with the African slaves transported to Haiti and Cuba in the eighteenth century. It then was taken to Argentina by migrating blacks to the slums of Buenos Aires. The tango is an erotic dance, popular with the less than respectable poor and ignored by anyone with pretensions to gentility. It thus became associated with prostitution and general lowlife. In spite of this, small orchestras played in hundreds of nightclubs and soon it spread to Europe, appearing first in Paris in the early 1900s where it was viewed with distaste. It was 1912 before it reached British shores. Tango teas were all the rage in London and Paris. This ‘Argentine” tango was the basis for the much sharper and staccato dance that we see in competitions today.
